David spent the first 20 years of his life on the family farm in northwestern Iowa. Upon graduation from high school he attended various colleges in a couple of different states taking on a variety of studies with theatre, forestry and engineering being the most prominent. In his early twenties, thinking that book-learning was not to his liking, he headed west to Los Angeles with the idea of becoming a recording artist. After bouncing around between California and Oregon, the Iowa farm, then back to the west coast again , he moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he's been living since 1986. In his time he has made a living working mostly with his hands as a house painter, carpenter, cabinet maker, furniture maker and all around handy man. He has also supported himself as an actor and as a songwriter. But now, as he moves into mid-life, his efforts are concentrated on his work with wood as an art medium. In only a few short years his wood assemblages have gained national attention and continue to inspire.
